Wayne Rogers portrait in Florida. Rogers was an actor most known for playing Captain “Trapper” John McIntyre on M*A*S*H.

Wayne Rogers has passed away. He was an actor most known for playing Captain “Trapper” John McIntyre on the M*A*S*H television show of the 1970s. Also an investor, Rogers was more recently a regular panelist on the Fox News Channel show, Cashin’ In. I took portraits of Rogers several years ago for a cover story in Emerald Coast magazine written by Scott Jackson. I photographed Rogers at his beach condo in Destin, Florida, during Jackson’s interview. He was kind and laid back, giving us plenty of time to complete the interview and get the photos we needed, and he even…

A detective in a fedora lights a cigarette at night in front of glowing street lights in a dramatic portrait.

By Scott Holstein

I’ve previously written about how to have flashes visible within the frame. In this post, I’ll discuss hiding the light source within the frame. This image was shot in downtown Tallahassee, Florida, using traffic lights and other street lights to form the background. These lights are turned into glowing globes by using a large aperture (f/4.0) and a longer focal length (200mm) while keeping the subject (and focus) close to the camera. The ambient lights dictate my exposure. I used four speedlights to light James, our detective model. The trick to this shot is that his cigarette “lighter,” which is…

Water splashes as a horse and rider jump over a fence in a water feature during the Red Hills International Horse Trials.

Red Hills International Horse Trials in Tallahassee, Florida The Red Hills International Horse Trials is a wonderful event in Tallahassee, Florida. It’s outdoors in the capital city in the spring, the season of perfect weather in northwest Florida. Resurrection fern-covered and Spanish moss-draped Southern Live Oak trees create a picture-perfect backdrop for the equestrian event, held in beautiful Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park on the north side of town, near Lake Jackson. Cross Country The Cross Country course, designed by Hugh Lochore, is my favorite, mixing adventure, athleticism, risk, and triumph. Plus, spectators are close to the action; rider and horse together…

A sailboat sits on the horizon during a vibrant beach sunset in Venice, Florida.

One evening while visiting family, the sunset was shaping up to be interesting. I grabbed the camera to do some landscape photography of the beach sunset in Venice, Florida. The sky was fairly cloudy, and as the sun set, it gave the clouds some nice color. After the sun dipped below the horizon, though, the sunset kept getting better. Although already set, the sun was still lighting the clouds in the west and we got a very vibrant, colorful sky and reflection off of the water. It became one of those amazing sunsets that only come around every once in…

Portrait of actor Tony Hale with a yellow toy duck by Tallahassee photographer Scott Holstein.

By Scott Holstein

I had the opportunity to create portraits of Tony Hale, Tallahassee, Florida’s Emmy Award-winning actor, when he visited home recently. Hale is known for playing Buster Bluth on the Fox comedy series Arrested Development and for playing Gary Walsh on the HBO comedy series Veep. Hale studied his craft at Tallahassee’s Young Actors Theatre while growing up. During his televised Emmy Award acceptance speech last September, the pinnacle of his career so far, he gave a shout-out to the theatre, its executive director, Tina Williams, and its musical director, Alison Grimes, both of whom had taught him some 25 years…

Portrait of Florida Governor Rick Scott in front of the mansion by Tallahassee photographer Scott Holstein.

By Scott Holstein

When 850 business magazine was launched in 2008, I photographed then-Florida Governor Charlie Crist in his office at the Capitol in Tallahassee for the cover of the inaugural issue. As the magazine recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, I had the opportunity to photograph current Florida Gov. Rick Scott on location at the Governor’s Mansion for the cover story of that issue of 850. The best way to photograph a politician or celebrity who has little time to pose for portrait photography is to get each shot set up in advance in order to be efficient with their time. That way,…
