Landscape photography of a dragonfly at sunset over Lake Jackson in Tallahassee, shot with an iPhone.

By Scott Holstein

A few evenings ago I was scouting a location for an upcoming photo shoot. I had already scouted a half dozen locations, none of which were really working for me. This particular evening I was scouting at Lake Jackson in Tallahassee, Florida. I had been to this particular spot before but I really didn’t think it would be ideal for this shoot. I was wrong. This spot had water that was the right depth, it had some nice vegetation to work with, and best of all, it had a great view of sunset. In fact, the sunset was so amazing…

Portrait of a woman in front of the view of downtown by Tallahassee photographer Scott Holstein.

By Scott Holstein

I recently photographed Emerald Coast Magazine’s Top Singles in Destin, Florida. Next I was the photographer for more Top Singles for the feature in the current issue of Tallahassee magazine. Over the course of two days I created environmental portraits of 14 of the area’s most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes on location at Hotel Duval in downtown Tallahassee, Florida. The hotel pretty much gave us free reign of the place as we photographed everywhere from the valet to Level 8 Lounge, where Connie Osborn and the view of downtown made the cover. Tallahassee Top Singles Event For you locals, the…

A dramatic portrait of Florida Governor Charlie Crist in the opening spread in 850 business magazine.

By Scott Holstein

When Rowland Publishing launched its newest title, 850 Business Magazine, a feature on Florida’s governor, Charlie Crist, “The CEO of Florida,” was the cover story in the inaugural issue of the new magazine and I was to create the editorial portrait photography. On the day of the photo shoot, I arrived at the governor’s office in the Capitol and waited to get set up. I had never been in the his office and never seen the layout nor the décor. I was not granted access to the office ahead of time to scout my location and set up, so I…

I recently traveled to HarborWalk Village in Destin, Florida to complete a marathon of 10 portraits on location in a day for Emerald Coast magazine’s “Top Singles” feature. Efficiency is the name of the game – with a schedule like that I’m running-and-gunning – setting up and shooting quickly and moving on with very little time to spare. A few shots into the day I had one of those lovely moments that makes me want to pull out my hair: my Canon 1D Mark III stopped responding. The LCD that displays my settings went nuts for a moment and then…

A beautiful woman holding a lantern peers out into a swamp at dusk.

By Scott Holstein

I had this narrative image in my head for some time – a beautiful young woman in a boat, deep in a Florida swamp at dusk. She’s holding a lantern, peering out into the darkness, searching for something. But what? I enlisted McKenzie Burleigh, a model with whom I’ve worked several times in the past, to pose for me as the beauty in a cypress swamp outside of Tallahassee. Accompanying her was Ed Tiley, a local actor, posing as a drunkard with her in the boat. I positioned them in the boat among the trees in the evening and shot…
