The Making of the Image, Sunny Hill Road 1

In the springtime, I traveled Tallahassee’s backroads, looking for photo locations along the many canopy roads. I stumbled upon this stretch of Sunny Hill Road one evening and stopped to work the scene.

In the final image, the red clay road winds beneath scraggly live oak trees and a blooming dogwood in the early spring.

Sunny Hill Road in Tallahassee, Florida

Sunny Hill Road is an old country road north of Tallahassee in Leon County, Florida, just below the Georgia state line. Part of Sunny Hill Road’s 5.5 mile length is paved and part is unpaved. The road runs mostly east-west from Thomasville Road near the unincorporated community of Iamonia on the western end to Old Centerville Road at the eastern end.

Sunny Hill Road is a rural and scenic drive, passing through the area’s plantation lands. It can be paired with Old Centerville Road, another Tallahassee canopy road, which would head south and come out at Centerville Road/Moccasin Gap Road in Felkel, near Bradley’s Country Store, to create a loop drive instead of an out-and-back drive.
