I have extensive experience in editorial photography, including shooting for daily newspapers, for magazines, and for books. I have a degree in photojournalism, I completed photography internships, and I was a photographer's assistant.
My Bachelor of Arts degree is in photojournalism from Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. I photographed for the University’s student newspaper and yearbook during my time there. I also freelanced for the local newspaper and shot sports photography for the University itself while in college.
I completed two internships at daily newspapers, one in North Carolina and one in Florida, covering everything from sports to features to breaking news. After the internships, I continued working for each newspaper as a freelance photojournalist for a period of time.
I interned with and then became first assistant to world-renowned photographer Joe McNally, who was Life magazine’s last staff photographer. I assisted him on numerous editorial shoots for newspapers and magazines in addition to his commercial photography projects. I learned a tremendous amount about location lighting and environmental portraiture from Mr. McNally, for which he is well-known.
I was the sole staff photographer at Rowland Publishing, a city/lifestyle magazine publishing company in Tallahassee, for seven years. Proprietary titles included Tallahassee magazine, 850 business magazine, Emerald Coast magazine, and Bay Life magazine. I also photographed for several client publications and other special projects produced by Rowland Publishing.
In addition to the editorial work, I also created commercial photography for clients' ads in the magazines and special projects.
I have been an editorial photographer since my early college years. Though I have departed from my photojournalism, documentary photography, and sports photography roots, I still regularly accept editorial assignments, mostly for my portraiture.
Due to my extensive background in editorial photography and working remotely on assignment, I am able to produce creative images that tell the story and that fit specific layout requirements for your magazine, book, newspaper, or other publication.
My use of location lighting and my unique environmental portraiture will help take your publication's production value to the next level, and when used on the cover (or above the fold), it will help it to stand out on the newsstand!
